Via Veneto neighbourhood
Via Vittorio Veneto, connects Piazza Barberini to Porta Pinciana in the rione or district Ludovisi. Famous for the “dolce vita” celebrated by Federico Fellini’s movie, it is one of the most famous, elegant, and expensive streets of Rome. Via Veneto is home to some of Rome’s most renowned cafés and hotels, like Café de Paris, Harry’s Bar, Regina Hotel Baglioni, The Westin Excelsior, Hard Rock Café’ and so on. Metro Linea A can be found at Piazza Barberini or at the Piazza di Spagna station through the Porta Pinciana escalator.
Piazza Barberini – 5 minutes
Piazza Barberini, a 16th century square in the centro storico or city center of Rome by the Quirinal Hill, is at the end of Via Veneto. In the square is Fontana delle Api (Fountain of the Bees), sculpted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and completed in April 1644). The metro station Piazza Barberini- Fontana di Trevi is located here, as well as a cinema, taxis, citysighseeing tours, restaurants, and much more. Fontana di Trevi is just few steps away.
Our Lady of the Conception of the Capuchins – 5 minutes
Commissioned in 1626 by Pope Urban VIII, although presenting art pieces by Caravaggio, Guido Reni and other artists, the church is mostly notorious for its crypt. In 1631 Cardinal Antonio Barberini, brother of the pope, ordered to exhume and transfer the remains of thousands of friars buried between 1500 and 1870 to decorate the crypt with elaborate ornamental designs. The resulting macabre art work was meant as a prayer and meditation space: great spiritual masters meditated and preached with a skull in their hands.
Villa Borghese and its park – 5 minutes
Villa Borghese Pinciana, with a 80 hectares (148 acres) park that stretches from Piazza del Popolo to Via Veneto, was dedicated by Scipione Borghese to parties and to house his art collection. Donated to the city in 1903, the park crowns the city in a glorious canopy of green as Rome third largest public park. Villa Borghese hosts museums, a theatre, a zoo, a lake, a winter iceskating facility, rollerblade and skateboarders space as well as fountains, buildings, and attractions.
The Trinita’ dei Monti church and the Spanish steps - 5 minutes via escalator – 10 minutes walking
The Trinita’ dei Monti church, better known for its location than artworks, stands on the Spanish Steps, overlooking the Piazza di Spagna. The imposing 135-steps staircase was inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII during the 1725 Jubilee to connect the Bourbon Spanish embassy to Trinità dei Monti. Designed by Alessandro Specchi and Francesco De Sanctis, it is decorated with garden-terraces, splendidly adorned in spring and summer. The baroque scalinata tops a sequence of straight streets leading down to the Tiber, and was designed to increase the scenic effect as approaching it. The Spanish Steps were restored and re-opened in 2016.
Piazza di Spagna – 5 minutes via escalator – 10 minutes walking
At the bottom of the Spanish Steps, Piazza di Spagna is one of the most celebrated squares of Rome. It hosts Fontana della Barcaccia, sculpted by Pietro Bernini and his famous son Gian Lorenzo. On the right is the house of the English poet John Keats, who lived there until his death in 1821, while on the left is the Babington’s tea room, founded in 1893. Piazza di Spagna is home to some of the most celebrated fashion streets of Rome: Via Condotti, Via del Babuino, Via della croce, and the iconic Via Margutta.
Palazzo del Quirinale or Quirinal Palace – 10 mins
The the Palazzo del Quirinale or Quirinale is the historical papal residence and currently official residence of the President of the Italian Republic. Located on the highest of the Seven Hills of Rome, the Quirinal Hill, it has housed thirty Popes since 1583, four Kings of Italy, and twelve presidents. The palace extends for an area of 110,500 square metres and is the 9th largest palace in the world (the US White House is one-twentieth of its size).
Fontana di Trevi or Trevi Fountain– 10 mins
The Trevi Fountain is located in the Trevi district. Designed by the architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Pietro Bracci, it stands 26.3 metres (86 ft) high and 49.15 metres (161.3 ft) wide as the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world. The fountain has appeared in several notable films, including Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita.
